For students new to Iyengar Yoga, we highly recommend that you attend an Introductory Class followed by a Beginner’s Series. However, it is not required. You can also begin your study by attending any Level 1 or Gentle class on our schedule.
- The Introductory Class is a basic one-class introduction and orientation to the study of Iyengar Yoga. This class serves as the foundation upon which the Beginner’s Series expands.
- The Beginner’s Series is a progressive 3-week course that lays the foundation of Iyengar Yoga. This series covers the basic postures and actions that you will encounter when you take a Level 1 Class.
- The Level 1 Classes are designed to accommodate beginners as well as students from other traditions. Try different times of the day, days of the week and different teachers per your convenience and find the best fit for you. Let your teacher know that you are new.
Students in Iyengar Yoga begin with basic standing poses. In time, forward bends, seated poses, twists, inversions, backward extensions, restorative poses and more are taught. As the student matures, so does the practice.
In class, teachers may use props such as blankets, blocks, belts, chairs, ropes or more to help students benefit from the poses regardless of their physical condition or level of experience.
