The Iyengar Yoga Association of Greater New York is a 501(c)3 non-profit educational organization dedicated to the art, science and philosophy of Iyengar Yoga. We seek to cultivate a diverse community of practitioners and affirm our stance as a place where all students are welcomed.
In the 1990’s the Institute began offering a free of charge class specifically for HIV positive students. Over the years, as outcomes for having HIV improved and the stigma lessened, less people identified with the label and the class grew quite small. This past Spring, we looked to find a fresh way to continue programming to support those who come to this class. Our solution was to expand our reach to the entire diverse community of LGBTQ+ students, which of course, will continue to include those who are HIV positive. Making this an LGBTQ+ class allows the Institute to reach a broader group of students within this still under-represented group. James Murphy, who teaches this class, emphasizes the positive, tangible and unique benefits of Iyengar Yoga within a supportive and empowering environment. All are welcome.
