April Philosophy: Brahmacharya

This month we are continuing our celebration of B.K.S. Iyengar’s Centennial with a new IYAGNY Philosophy Highlight.

This April, the theme is Brahmacharya or Continence. Patanjali defines Brahmacharya in Yoga Sutra II.38. In the translation found in Patanjala Yoga Sutra Paricaya, B.K.S. Iyengar writes: “Upon the establishment of chastity or self-control, knowledge, vigour, power and energy are attained, retained and maintained.”

In the video below, Nikki Costello, Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher and faculties Member at the Iyengar Yoga Institutes of New York and Brooklyn, reflects on Brahmacharya.
