TEACHER TRAINING

The Iyengar Yoga Association of Greater New York offers a two-year Teacher Training program, with basic and progressive study of asana, Pranayama, anatomy and yoga philosophy. Other specific programs at the Institutes supplement the program.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

Teacher Training is open to practitioners of Iyengar Yoga who have mature knowledge and a regular practice. To become a teacher in the tradition of B.K.S. Iyengar, you should be passionate about Iyengar Yoga and dedicated to sharing it. You must have been studying the method for several years, be able to work well at Level 3, and have a home practice.

Applicants must fill out an application form and attend an evaluation to present their understanding of Iyengar Yoga as they demonstrate the asanas on the Introductory syllabus.

Requirements include:

  1. Completed application and $25 application fee.
  2. Consistent study and practice of Iyengar Yoga method at Level 3.
  3. Demonstration of sufficient knowledge of the asanas to undertake the program. Your knowledge of the asanas will be evaluated on:
    • Knowledge of the Sanskrit names of the poses.
    • Demonstration of the accurate form and actions of the asanas.
    • Concentration and attention to alignment, extension and breath.
    • Use of props to improve asanas, or make them possible or appropriate for you.
  4. Commitment to completion of the two-year course.
  5. Current and continuing membership in the Iyengar Yoga Association of Greater New York.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The two-year Teacher Training Program is approximately 150 course hours over three 9-week sessions (Fall, Winter and Spring) a year. Weekly classes, from 3 – 5 p.m. Tuesdays, cover asanas, anatomy and philosophy.

The first year of the program includes your participation in a Level 1 course at the Institute. In the second year you will be placed as an observer in a Level 1 class, apprenticing with a faculty member as you learn to assist a Level 1 class.

In addition, your training includes Sunday Workshops offered by Institute faculty. We also strongly encourage you to attend Sutra Study classes on Friday afternoons.

Trainees are expected to attend two Pranayama classes over the two- year period and two of the major Guest Teacher Workshops offered by the Institute. You are also expected to continue your own study and practice at Level 3 and 4 at the Institute. The costs of these classes and Guest Workshops are not included in your Teacher Training fees.

Following completion of the Teacher Training Program, students are eligible to participate in the Continuing Education Program at the Institute.

 

COURSE FEES

The course fee is $2700 per year – $900 per each of the three sessions. Payment is due before each session begins. Students are expected to attend the entire program. There is no partial admission or pro-rating of course fees.

 
 

ABOUT CERTIFICATION

Iyengar Yoga teacher certification is administered by the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States (IYNAUS). The program at the Iyengar Yoga Association of Greater New York helps teachers prepare for national certification.
