March 2017 at Iyengar Yoga Institutes of New York and Brooklyn

The Iyengar Yoga Association of Greater New York is a diverse community connected through the “sustained practice” and study of Iyengar Yoga.

From our beginnings in 1987 to the present, the collective efforts of our community allows us to serve our mission and continue to flourish.

“Mary Dunn, Senior Iyengar Yoga Teacher and one of our founders writes on the occasion of the inauguration of the first Iyengar Yoga Institute of New York:

The Iyengar Yoga Institute of New York is privileged to serve this cosmopolitan community and provide experience in this living art and science of yoga as taught by Guruji. We serve people of all cultures, in the arts and professions and in various walks of life.  We will continue to broaden our program to include classes in the philosophy of yoga and the art of teaching, but at the core of our program are the asana and pranayama classes following the spirit given to us by Guruji.
We are honored to take our place among those Institutes and centers all over the world providing a link of universal understanding in yoga between nations, cultures and people that comes from the culturing of each individual soul.”

Recently members of our community have been featured in the media.

  • James Murphy, Senior Iyengar Yoga Teacher and Association Director, was interviewed by YogaWeb TV
  • Carrie Owerko, Senior Iyengar Yoga Teacher and member of our association was featured by YogaJournal.
  • Richard Jonas, Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher and writer recently collaborated on a book with photographer Richard Phibbs.
  • Daniel Humm, world renowned chef and student of Iyengar Yoga was recently featured by Squire Magazine.

This march dive into the practice of Iyengar Yoga, join the community of practitioners brought together by Iyengar Yoga.

“Practice involves tapas (the purifying fire of action). Tapas is nothing but disciplining the mind through the eight limbs of yoga.”

“Action in Yoga is tapas.”
